Over the following 130 years purchase of adjoining land saw the property grow to over 1,000 acres. A considerable workforce was employed to work on the farm. Many of the men and some of their families lived at Kilmuir in workers' cottages. Kilmuir Country Retreat was originally the shearers' quarters.
