Great views of Casco Bay and calm waters so very safe for kids. Plenty of room especially at low tide, and rocks for kids to explore and find crabs, seaglass, etc. • South Beach – Biggest beach of the Calendar Islands and most popular on Long Island. Usually calm water but can get bigger surf compared to other beaches • Front Beach – Access on Stairs behind VFW. Narrow but long and rocky beach on front side of the Island Stores • Boathouse Beverage and Variety - Convenience store right off the Ferry Boat run by Scott and Laurie Wood. Our favorite place to get additional supplies such as eggs, water, beer, hot dog buns etc. • Byers and Sons Long Island Bakehouse - On Island Ave at top of the hill from the ferry. Seasonal and owned by Kat and Matt. Only spot for gas on the island. Great stop for pizza, sandwiches, ice cream, draft beer and wine, and souvenirs. Has a little deck overlooking Casco Bay to sit outside and eat • Ivy Hall Gift Shop - On Fowler Rd on way to the beach. Very limited hours, but great place for Long Island and Maine trinkets and souvenirs. Good selection of candy, kites, frisbees etc for the kids • Fern Park Lobster Company - On Beach Ave. The place to get cheap live lobsters if you want to make them yourself (we have all the equipment to do so). Owned by the Floyd family (Mike and Kathleen) who are so nice. If they don’t pick up when you call, leave a message letting them know how many lobsters or pounds you want and they will call you right back. • Hard Shell Cafe - Across from Long Island Bakehouse. Sometimes has Lobster dinner specials on the weekend; reservations only Activities • Biking - Can bike the whole island and there are also many trails on the interior to explore (make sure you always put bug spray on if you’re going through the woods!) • Long Island School - Has a huge playground, basketball and tennis court • Community Center - Right off of Ferry Terminal. Check their class schedule as they often have activities for kids such as arts and crafts, pottery, adventure camp etc • The Bunny Hop - A dirt road right down the street from our house that kids will love. All sorts of bunny toys, stuffed animals etc on both sides of the road. The kids will love to point them out and count them • There are 2 churches on the Island – Star of the Sea Catholic Church and Evergreen United Methodist PORTLAND Family Activities • Portland Head Lighthouse (Fort Williams Park) - Most photographed lighthouse in the world. In Cape Elizabeth about 20 minutes from Portland. Plenty of room for the kids to run around. One of the best lobster rolls we’ve had was at a food truck there There is a pretty good restaurant on the water in Cape Elizabeth as well called Saltwater Grille • Old Port - Steps from the Ferry terminal, this is the old historic sections of Portland. Very walkable with tons of shops, restaurants, cobblestone streets, and quirky stores • Children’s Museum and Theathre – 142 Free St off of Congress • Portland Science Center – Steps from the Ferry on Commercial St • Portland Sea Dogs - AA Team of the Boston Red Sox. Restaurants (some of our favorites in Downtown Portland within walking distance of the Ferry) • Eventide – Amazing Oyster and Lobster Rolls, always packed thought • Vignola Cinque Terre - Great Italian • Street and Company - Seafood • Duck fat – Gastropub • Scales – Seafood and Oysters (most other spots along Commercial St are touristy and overpriced) • Otto - awesome gourmet pizza • The Holy Donut – All organic homemade donuts on Exchange St. (worth the wait) Gastropubs with good beer selection and food • Novare Res • Thirsty Pig (Both are right off of Exhange St which runs Between. Fore St and Middle St) Breweries Bissell Brothers - Best beer in Portland IMO. It’s a little outside of town at Thompsons Point. Rising Tide is really good too and in town There are a bunch of others good ones like The Maine Beer Co, Austin St, etc but they are all a good 10-15 min drive outside of town OTHER ISLANDS • Peaks Island is the biggest and most populous. Has a couple restaurants as well and worth exploring on bike • Chebeauge Island • Diamond Cove – Has a couple good restaurants Contact Info For any urgent situations, questions need, please contact: Tim Whelan Tierney Grace Meegan Whelan
