Jacaranda House, Gamboa rainforest lodging
Our restored canal zone home sits on a cul-de-sac in historic Gamboa. It is surrounded by trees and overlooks the town with Panama Canal and passing ships in the distance. An original Damon Kyllo mural adorns one large wall. You will love the balcony, high ceilings, artwork, breezes, and the cacophony of frogs, monkeys, and parrots. This is a great place for birdwatchers and a starting point for exploring the Panama Canal, Soberanía National Park, and the Chagres River. The space The apartment has been restored to 1934 form (high ceilings, natural ventilation, ceiling fans, and wood floors). It is a duplex shared with another Smithsonian biologist. The muralist Damon Kyllo has done other artwork for the Smithsonian. Our backyard is a birding hotspot (ranked 13th on ebird for the country of Panama). The town of Gamboa is quiet and safe for walking and jogging. Guest access Guests have access to the entire half-house. Our caretaker, Miriam, occupies the room on the ground floor but guests are welcome to use the hammock in this area and the backyard. Other things to note The area and house are generally breezy, however, afternoons can be warm so fans should be used. Evenings are generally cool and comfortable under the ceiling fan. We have good water pressure but occasionally (e.g., once per year) water is unexpectedly shut off in Gamboa for a day or more. We provide filtered water from the small faucet next to the kitchen sink. The switch for the living room ceiling fan is located in the hammock room. There is a bus service from Gamboa to the Albrook shopping mall and bus terminal. We recommend buying groceries before coming to Gamboa. We can recommend a driver to transport you from the airport to Gamboa and stop along the way for supplies..
