Other things to note LIVING WITH WILDLIFE The rainforest is a dynamic environment teeming with brilliant plant and animal life. Matapalo does not have grounded electricity, glass windows, sealed housing, air conditioning or other conveniences that you may be accustomed to, which is also how the area stays so pristine. This may mean that you might discover some "friends" living among you or visiting you, most of whom are harmless and are a natural part of the environment. Snakes on the property are rare. Scorpions are common but easily avoided with a little care. Ants live in the grass and the sand so remember to wipe/sweep up food crumbs. Geckos and other insects may find their way inside. They are most often attracted to lights, so at night, keep the bedroom doors closed and the lights off when you're not present. The house is cleaned and prepared in the several hours before your expected arrival. However, geckos may continue to explore the walls and ceilings of the house and leave droppings. If you discover droppings on the sheets or other surfaces, you may ask the caretaker to make up a fresh bed and/or clean the surface. Their droppings are harmless otherwise. MOLD Mold is very common in the jungle during the rainy season. Our cleaners do their best to clear it from all surfaces regularly before guests arrive. If you discover patches that need to be addressed, please let our caretaker know, and he will happily clean them off. FOOD + OTHER PROVISIONS It is a good idea to stop for provisions at one of the several grocery stores in Puerto Jimenez. Matapalo is about a 45-minute drive from town. While there are several dining options available in the area, there are no markets, and you may want to stock up on snacks, fresh fruit, drinks, etc. WATER + HOT WATEER Water from the tap is from an underground aquifer. It is clean and drinkable but has a high mineral content. La Casa Hoy is a solar-powered, completely off-the-grid home in a very remote jungle community. Unfortunately, this means that regular amenities like hot water may be temperamental. There is a caretaker on site who can assist. HOUSEKEEPING + LAUNDRY SERVICE Additional housekeeping and laundry services are available for an additional fee; please check with host.
