This quiet and charming village on the northeast coast of the Yucatán Peninsula is nestled in the National Park of Ria Lagartos, the home of sea turtles that visit the beach shores between June and August to lay their eggs in the warm sand. With more than 250 varieties of birds, Río Lagartos is internationally famous for bird watching. As you arrive in El Cuyo, you cross over a red lagoon -- the color is the result of a high concentration of salt. The red water in the lagoon is the source of the color of over 20,000 pink flamingos that make their home here between January and September!
