Feel like you're relaxing at grandma's house with a peaceful stay in the country — only 1.5 miles from downtown Henderson. This completely renovated home retains its 1944 charm, while providing you with modern comforts, spacious walk-in tile showers, all new appliances, great mattresses, washer, dryer, fast WiFi and an open floor plan. Reserve this home at a cost comparable to two hotel rooms, and enjoy privacy, space to gather and cozy areas to relax or nap alone. The space History and Renovation of Rhodes Home Built in 1944, this property was home to Lois Smith Rhodes from her mid-20s until she entered a skilled nursing facility at age 94 in 2021. She and her husband, Theo, raised their children (Teresa and Trent) here, and she lived in this home about 70 years before she moved to the nursing home in Henderson. She passed away a couple of months before she turned 95. Lois worked as an administrative assistant at Freed-Hardeman University, serving president and university namesake N.B. Hardeman and others on the faculty. Her husband, Theo, owned an Esso’s service station on Main Street, and they cared for cows and many beloved plants on these acres. You’ll still see Theo’s muscadine vines in the backyard today, along with pecan, pear and many other species of mature trees in the yard. The Rhodes family owned dozens of acres of farmland on both sides of this end of Hill Avenue. In the spring, you’ll see buttercups that Lois planted more than 70 years ago. They were from her childhood home, also on Hill Avenue, that was destroyed during a March 1952 tornado. That storm claimed the lives of her parents and younger brother, along with several other residents. She spoke about them often and was able to attend a ceremony unveiling a marker on the Chester County Courthouse lawn that commemorated her family and other victims. Lois was a wonderful neighbor to Jason and Dawn Bramblett and their children, Drew and Hallie, from the time the family moved next door in 2003. To honor her legacy and provide a place of hospitality, the Brambletts purchased this house in March 2022. Working with Taylor Construction and Restoration, they completely renovated it. The farmhouse style sink in the kitchen was actually the original bathtub from the home. The Rhodes Home of Henderson is officially opening to serve guests the second half of 2023. All kitchen appliances, bathroom fixtures, bedding and couches are new. Some period pieces have been purchased from Back In Time Antiques and Boutique, Bray’s Furniture and Cox’s Antiques in Henderson, where you may enjoy shopping. We have a number of charming local restaurants, stores, spas, boutiques, parks and much more in Chester County! Your Besso’s Gift Card You’ll find a $10 Besso’s card as our gift to you. Appliances: You’ll find small appliances and paper towels on the two shelves under the microwave. TVs: Each bedroom and the living room have a smart TV. You should be able to log into apps you may have or stream from any device you’ve brought. Dishes, Eating Utensils, Pots and Pans: Dishes and glasses can be found to the left of the kitchen sink. Pots and pans can be found to the right of the sink and under the stove. Washing Dishes: The dishwasher can be used as you need, and tabs are under the kitchen sink. Dishwashing liquid and smaller plastic tubs to handwash dishes in the sink are available, too. There are extra sponges in the entryway closet if needed. Charging areas: You’ll find chargers with multiple outlets around the house. Some have cell phone chargers built into them; you may be able to just place your cell phone on them to charge without a special cord. Cleaning Supplies and Trash Bags: There are trash bags and cleaning supplies under the kitchen sink and in the entryway hall closet in case you need them. There is also a hand vac in the front bathroom. We do not expect you to clean before you leave, of course. These are just for your convenience during your stay. Trash: Please place all trash in a bag, and take full bags to the large black can in the garage. There is no city trash pickup at the house, so we will be picking up bagged trash and driving it away. We cannot transport loose trash in the can, and it attracts bugs; thank you in advance for bagging all of it. Recycling: The blue recycling bin in the kitchen is for paper, cardboard, aluminum cans and hard plastics. Please make sure that all food has been removed from anything you place there and just leave it in the kitchen. We have a great regional recycling center here and will get it there. Fireplace: The electric candles in the fireplace have a remote on the mantle to turn them on. The fireplace is capped, so there can be no real fire in it. Animals: You may see rabbits, squirrels, birds, deer, raccoons and more in the yard, and there are goats, chickens and dogs within fences next door. Guest access You will be able to walk on the entire four acres, sit on the back porch, and use the entire home (except for an owner's closet in the back). Other things to note The BBQ grill is actually a Blackstone on the back porch. Special utensils are placed near it.
