Yurt on Chebeague Island
Imagine staying in a yurt in the woods of Chebeague Island, nestled peacefully in a private clearing in the woods. Explore island beaches and hidden trails. Cozy warm heater for fall. This yurt is “glampy” inside with leather chairs, log bed. The yurt has a rusticator kitchen with all of the basics for cooking, small fridge, stovetop, sink. Outdoor fire pit and firewood. Check ferry options on Casco Bay Lines or Chebeague Transportation. Host will provide transport to/from ferry to the yurt. The space The Island Yurt is located in the 16 acres woods behind the home of hosts Eliza Jane and Rocky, accessible by an old cart path onto South Road. This "glampy" yurt is designed for comfort and offers a unique island experience. Settle into leather bucket swivel chairs. Sleep on a substantial pine log bed seeing stars through the dome. Listen to the sounds of the woods, and in the early morning for the sound of distant lobster boats. The yurt is heated and will stay cozy warm during cool weather. A fan is provided. Chebeague Island is a scenic ferry ride away from downtown Portland on Casco Bay Lines or travel by Chebeague Transportation from Cousins Island with a parking lot and shuttle bus from Rt 1 in Cumberland. Eliza Jane or Rocky will meet you upon arrival by ferry in a four-seater ATV for transportation to the yurt, and this service is included in the rental of the yurt. The yurt is located near the center of the island, a five minute walk from the Chebeague Island Boat Yard and within walking distance to anywhere on the island. The yurt kitchenette is set up for rustic cooking, and includes cookware, utensils, dishes, oil for cooking. The two burner stove is a traditional boat stove. Under the counter is a small dorm sized fridge. The kitchen sink has a hand pump. Hot water is provided by an electric kettle, and a pour-over coffee set-up. Plenty of drinking and cooking water is provided. The bed is a queen sized log bed where you can fall asleep while looking at the stars. Nice bedding provided. Relax in the two leather bucket swivel chairs, where you will want to sit and melt in comfort. Play chess or cribbage. Read. Relax. Outside: The front door of the yurt opens onto a deck which opens into a clearing in the woods and a stone walled pathway. Relax in Adirondack chairs around a fire pit, ample firewood included. The entire property has 16 acres of woodland and walking trails that connect to the Chebeague Cumberland Land Trust woods. A screen house is available upon request. When lobsters are in season, an outdoor cooker and steam pot can be provided upon request, along with everything needed for preparing your own lobster dinner. During summer months, fresh organic produce is available at the Second Wind Farm, a 15 minute walk away through a path in the woods. There is electricity in the yurt for indoor lighting and device charging, but this yurt feels off the grid. Be sure to bring a headlamp. Internet access is available from Adirondack chairs in the front yard of Eliza and Rocky's house. The composting toilet is adjacent to the yurt, in a private outhouse on a raised platform. The composting toilet is surprisingly "neutral”. An outdoor shower is located in a private location near Eliza and Rocky's house. Soap, shampoo and towels provided. Yup, hot water! For eating out on the island: all restaurants are seasonal. The Chebeague Inn is a wonderful experience and has the best sunset view is Casco Bay. They will provide transportation for yurt guests. Other options include the Niblic, Two Birds Cafe and Doughty’s Island Market, plus the Secondwind Farm in season. Guest access The best way to explore the island is by walking, on the roads, wooded trails, or beaches. Hosts Eliza Jane or Rocky will be able to provide transportation to and from the ferry. Bikes are a good option for exploring the island, and are allowed on the ferry. You can ask Eliza about the possibility of bikes available on the island.
