Other things to note Pine Knot Cottage was built and named by Cornelia Clapp in 1920 who was one of the first researchers at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, and a prominent zoologist in her time. In recognition of the accomplishments of women in the founding years of MBL, the esteemed Lillie Building Auditorium that has hosted numerous Nobel Prize scientists, has been renamed Cornelia Clapp Auditorium. She was a professor at Mount Holy Oak College and was honored by having buildings and lab areas named after her on that campus during her lifetime. A tribute to her research and contribution to zoology can be found cast in our cottage fireplace where Clapp's illustrious Opsanus Tau (the oyster toadfish :) is set in stone. This fascinating species continues to this day to provide information toward the study of balance, muscle functions and diabetes to name just a few important research areas. Clapp has been attributed to providing this unusual fish with its specific scientific name. Two Woods Hole toadfish were even nominated to go into space with John Glen in 1995 to study issues of balance in space!!! Quite an honor and much was learned from the fish upon their safe return to planet Earth.
