Bluff House
Bluff House is a midcentury modern with a fieldstone fireplace, exposed beams and a wall of windows in the living room. A private drive leads to a secluded 35 acres on Catskill Creek. The house has two bedrooms and a loft with a day bed up a ladder. The space Two bedrooms accommodate up to four guests (one queen, one twin bed) and a sleeping loft has a day bed that turns into two twin mattresses. Kitchen, dining room, living room, and deck with barbecue complete the house, which is situated back from the road on 35 acres ideal for cross country skiing and snowshoeing. For downhill skiers, Windham is a 25 minute drive, and Hunter Mountain is a 35 minute drive. You’re 2 hours from the George Washington Bridge. For those who want to stay close to home, winter affords gorgeous views of Catskill Forest Preserve from the dining room, kitchen, and South Bedroom, and all along the bluff. Catskill Creek is a scramble down the bluff and runs through the property. Our woods are filled with mushrooms, berries, diverse trees and plant life, and a matching community of birds and animals. You are less than 15 minutes to shopping in Cairo and close to delicious dinners at Ruby’s Hotel in Freehold, and in Greenville at the Mountain View Brasserie and the Hollowbrook Inn. Built in 1969, Bluff House was conceived with mid-century flair by the local art teacher who lived in it and lovingly maintained it for 50 years. In taking over the house, my partner, Mical, and I are doing our best to keep the integrity of his vision. This is the opposite of a complete renovation. Almost everything in the house is original, and the furnishings we've brought to it are either from the period or in its spirit (I am a furniture maker and a number of the house's pieces are my own). There is WiFi but no TV. Out of respect for the environmental, we emphasize recycling and use low-impact products (ideally scent-free). We are LGBTQ friendly and dog positive (dogs must be respectful of the local wildlife). Most of the house is on one floor (only the loft is up a ladder) and there is ramp access. The front door and bathroom may require limited mobility. If you use a wheelchair, please call us for details so that we can give you a better sense of whether the house would suit you. We have not child-proofed and recommend you only bring children older than 6. Guest access You will have the house and property to yourselves. (Though someone may come to mow the lawn.) We have WiFi, a working gas fireplace, outdoor gas grill, washer and dryer, hose for washing down your bike or your dog, a long driveway for parking. Cell service is good at the house. We do not have a TV or dishwasher. Both bedrooms have sliding doors for summer breezes and a view of the stars. The kitchen has all the basics for cooking (pots, pans, rolling pin, lasagna pans, spices, oil and vinegar). Other things to note If you scramble down the bluff to Catskill Creek, you can go fishing in a pristine trout stream. A permit is required.
