Take it easy at this unique retreat where the city and greenway meet. This 2 BD/ 1.5 BA home, built during the depression and renovated during the pandemic, boasts of these eras. It is located in the mid heights of Hazelwood just below the cemetery on a dead end street. It requires a 42 step ascent to the entrance. It has more decks than bedrooms and a hot tub that shares the lower deck with a propane grill. Nearby: Waterfront, Southside, Squirrel Hill, the City Parks and the GAP trail. The space 2 story, 2 BD/1.5 BA over 1200+ square feet. 2 bedrooms each with a queen bed and a love seat. There is a den with a twin futon and a pullout twin sofa in the living room for additional sleeping options. There are electric fireplaces in the living room, master and den. The kitchen is equipped with fridge, gas stove, microwave and coffee options. There is a coffee pot, a keurig, tea kettle and french press. The hot tub is a mira 1000 250 gallon 4 seat spa. It is a 2015 floor model and the cover is heavy. There is wi-fi but NO T.V.! There are blinds and curtains in the bedrooms, but they are NOT black out. Parking: it’s the last house on a a dead end city street of 3 houses. You can park in front of the house. This does require being able to reverse out of the driveway, or doing a 3 point turn on the narrow street. Another alternative is a pull off parking spot at the beginning of the driveway. It is set up for 4 people comfortably (2 queen beds) but has 2 additional twin bed options. However, those additional beds are in rooms with no doors (living room and den). Guest access You can access the entire house with the exception of the basement, next to the dining room (which is locked) and the upstairs hallway closet (which is reserved for cleaning crew and also locked ) Other things to note Parking! it’s the last house of 3 on a dead end city street. You can park in front of the house. This does require being able to reverse out of the driveway (navigating between a Mercedes some logs and trash cans), or doing a 3 point turn (or 4 or 5 (possibly even 6…depending on vehicle size)) on the narrow, sloping, deteriorating city street with no guard rail. (Mainly an issue at winter time). Another alternative is a pull off parking spot at the beginning of the driveway near the grassy entrance, where dogs love to walk and do all the things. Indicate whether you want to use the hot tub during your stay, so it can be serviced accordingly and set at the appropriate temperature etc. Also…Point of information: The house was built during the depression…1929 to be exact. The roaring 20’s were coming to a hault. It’s nearly 100 years old…and that’s not lost by anyone who steps inside or even glances from a distance. The walls are thin and the cracks are prevalent. (For example, if you spill a beverage on the upper floor, a person might feel it on the lower floor. ) It’s all part of the experience. (And if you can’t embrace this type of charm, you might not enjoy your stay entirely). Aside from ikea shelving and a few art pieces (which are fantastic, btw) , there is nothing “modern” about it. It is old. Really really old. 1929 old. Old old. It’s old. And still standing, and absolutely fantastic! Also to note, I can’t help what the raccoon brings into the yard (or takes) overnight. The house is next to the greenway. Sometimes he brings things, other times he takes things. (He likes shiny things.) He’s taken a few outside dog water bowls…usually he just washes his hands in them. Sometimes he out right takes them. I can’t control this. On the flip side, It’s also within city limits, directly up the street from the train tracks and fire station. City noises and sirens can occasionally be heard. Police megaphones are much much much less common, but prevalent enough for me to mention. Fireworks can also be heard more often than once a year. In the ratio of things from most likely to least likely to hear…the order would be: wildlife definitely, trains probably, sirens maybe, fireworks maybe, megaphones, I hope not! Generally speaking, it is a quiet dead end street and a city anomaly and depending on the season… some birds, butterflies, snakes and bees, geekering foxes , silent deer, skunks and opossums, hooting owls, gobbling turkeys and an occasional howl from a coyote. But, be ready for the best and worst of both, city & woods…it’s Hazelwood! Location & distances from points of interest: It’s Hazelwood neighborhood in Pittsburgh (still considered east end, but right next to the mon river). Last exit before the squirrel hill tunnels on 376 eastbound (squirrel hill homestead exit) all driving distances and minutes are subject to traffic, route changes and everything else. So I’ve also included Birds Eye view distance and lots of points for triangulation.
