Both the half bath on the first floor and the full bathroom on the second floor are absolutely beautiful. This beautiful 1780 post and beam colonial is constructed primarily of walnut. It is the original homestead of Joseph Taft; records indicate that it underwent renovations in the mid 1800's by his grandson Zadock Taft. Something to note: Historic documents show that his name was commonly spelled "Zadok" as well. The "Zadock Taft House" is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Zadock Taft is the grandson of Joseph Taft, one of the 5 sons of Robert Taft who was the patriarch of the prominent Taft family. Zadock A. Taft (who the house is named for) is a cousin of President William Howard Taft who visited the Zadock Taft House during his presidency and noted that he had more relatives in Uxbridge than in any other town. We have searched for a picture of President Taft in the house but have not found one. An excerpt from the "Taft Family Gathering" that took place on the Uxbridge Town Common on August 12, 1874 reads, "The descendants of Joseph are widely scattered. They are outnumbered in Uxbridge, by the descendants of the second Robert. But the homestead of Captain Joseph, the monumental farm, which he was the first to clear and improve, and where he spent his whole active life, and where he died, is held firmly by his great grandson, Zadock A. Taft, Esq., to whom the descendants of Joseph from abroad, owe a many thanks for preserving it." Zadok (aka Zadock A. Taft, Esq.) was present at this gathering in Uxbridge as this was read by President William Howard Taft's father, Judge Alphonso Taft. We are honored and feel fortunate to have acquired this beautiful home and cosmetically restore it to its historical charm. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to share this piece of history with others!
