The Jay Inn
The Jay Inn in downtown Fitzgerald was a welcoming home before it became an Inn. It's an expression of what can be done with a house to make an environment a family can thrive in. Mr. Davis built the house more than 100 yrs ago using brick manufactured in the original Colony City. Beautiful stained glass is featured throughout the Inn. It is furnished with cherished antiques handed down from the Jays’ families or lovingly collected through a family hobby of searching out exceptional pieces. The space Sleeping spaces downstairs include the master bedroom which has a queen size bed and a small room we call Rosie’s nook which has a twin bed. Upstairs, there are 5 bedrooms, 2 with a double bed, 2 with two twins, and a back bedroom with a queen bed. Upstairs, there is 1 full bath with a tub and shower. (Another bath upstairs is not functional at this time.) There are 2 baths downstairs, one with a shower. The kitchen is fully appointed with a full size stove, refrigerator, and dishwasher. There is a microwave and a Keurig coffee maker as well as an electric tea kettle. The cabinets were hand painted by our Mama Jay 40 years ago. Beautiful copper light covers are hand-tooled with her favorite sayings, adding a quaint homey feel to the kitchen. Throughout, the house boasts high ceilings and vibrant wall paper. There are several beautiful stained glass windows, and lots of old (and not so old) colorful glass items brightening many rooms. Furnishings include stately antiques in every room. In 1977 a wonderful, multi-functional great room was added to the house. Varied hues are cast over the room from a beautiful Victorian stained glass window and a grand old fireplace which is the focal point of the room. The mantel was put together from antique furniture, old doors from the old Baptist Church, and the newel posts from the historic Lee Grant Hotel. Among the many antiques is a stately secretary once used by Judge D.E. Griffin in his office which adds character to the room as does the table of curly pine from the old Lee-Grant Hotel. The working fireplace gives the room a warm and cozy feel in winter and when the room is cooled in summer, that cozy comfortable feeling remains. This room also has tables for dining, gathering or playing games, and more can be added if the room is to be used as meeting space for larger groups. Upstairs there is also a library which we are still improving but is already a comfortable space to relax and read. Another room upstairs, the closed-in front porch, now has 2 twin beds but also has a table to play cards or board games. Guest access 1-2 guests have access to the whole downstairs, including a queen and a twin bed. Upstairs may not be available to 1 or 2 guests. Larger groups, up to 13 people, have access to the entire Inn, including 5 bedrooms and 2 baths upstairs.
